Three Years For Melchiori

The Winnipeg Jets have signed 20 year old defenseman, Julien Melchiori to a 3 year Entry Level Contract.

Melchiori is only in his second year in the OHL. Last year he played for the Kitchener Rangers where he got 19 points in 63 games (1 goal and 18 assists), he also had 55 penalty minutes and finished the season with a great +24. This season Melchiori started with the Rangers where he got 19 points (2 goals and 17 assists), along with 42 penalty minutes and +6 in 35 games.

He was then acquired by the Oshawa Generals on January 8th for a 4th round pick in 2015 and 2016. On that day Tyler Randell had been reassigned to the Rangers from the Providence Bruins catching the Rangers organization by surprise. They dealt Melchiori to make room for the returning power forward. Melchiori is still playing for the Generals and currently has 17 points (all assists), 22 penalty minutes and a rating of +4 in 25 games.

Known for using his size of 6-foot-4, 209 pounds in the game for some monster checks, Melchiori will bring some great grit to the Jets defense in the coming years. Melchiori has good puck control and skating ability. He received loads of ice time when playing in the OJHL in both the 2008-09 season and 2009-10 season, and so can prove that he can handle the time. Melchiori was drafted by the thrashers organization in the 3rd round, 87th overall in 2010. Melchiori will likely need a couple years in the AHL to further develop.

Jets signing rating: C+, good D prospect with good potential.
