The Anaheim Ducks have signed 18 year old goaltender John Gibson to a 3 year entry level contract on March 15th. John Gibson was their 2nd round pick of the last draft (39th overall).
The 6-foot-3, 212 pound goaltender has a steller record so far in the OHL. John Gibson this year decided to leave his school to play for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL where he brought his team to a probably 3rd place finish in their conference and have clinched a playoff birth.
In his 31 games he has played for the Rangers, Gibson has a 20-10-3 record, 2.81GAA and 0.926SV%. Gibson had to miss a fair amount of games due to multiple reasons including a concussion, bronchitis, pneumonia, a sore back, and to get his adenoids/tonsils removed. In the OHL Gibson currently is ranked 7th for GAA, 3rd for SV%, and 13th for wins.
John Gibson has also represented team USA many times, most recently he played for USA in the WJC, but he has also taken team USA to gold in the under 18 world tournament in Germany in 2011. In that tournament Gibson had a 2.34 GAA, .926SV%, and a 6-0 record to be named the top goaltender in the tournament.
Anaheim has weaker depth in goaltending prospects than most in the NHL having only two notable ones in him and Bobkov. In our Anaheim Ducks Prospect Report, League It To Us writers Luke Rachar, Josh Daniels and myself (Greg Komarnicky) had him at an overall ranking of 3rd with a mark of 7.5B, this includes all Anaheim prospects of all positions. Separate rankings and marks were 3rd - 7.5B for Luke, 6th - 7.5C for Josh and 2nd - 8.0B for myself.
Anaheim is likely just looking to lock him up while they can, he is not likely ready for the jump to the NHL for 2 years or so.
Anaheim singing rating: B, locked up a solid goalie prospect
