The Boston Bruins have signed Vancouver Giants goaltender Adam Morrison to a three-year entry level contract today.
Morrison, a 21 year old, 6-foot-3 185 pound goaltender was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round in 2009. And third-round for a goaltender is fairly high. He was the sixth goalie taken in the draft, Robin Lehner being the most successful of those taken, thus far in their young careers.
Morrison has a .901 SV% this season and a 2.73 GAA with the Giants. He also played two games with the Saskatoon Blades. He had played for the Blades his previous three seasons before being traded with Levi Bews to the Giants for Michael Burns, Zach Hodder, and a 4th round pick in the 2013 bantam draft.
Morrison's competition for an NHL role in the future is interesting. Boston goaltending consists of an older Thomas and Turco, so scratch them off his list by the time he's ready. Then you have Rask who will be the clear starter unless something unexpected happens. So when NHL ready, Morrison will be competing with the likes of Hutchinson and Khudobin (the goalies Boston has right now) for the role of backup.
However Adam Morrison is still a good 3 or so years away, so it is not clear what will be the case then. Really just a minor deal to try to add some more depth to their prospect goaltending and in doing so gives them more options in the future so they won't be stuck in the case of an injury like Rask this season.
Boston signing rating: B-, added to goalie prospect depth
