Mathieu Carle signs with Dinamo Riga

The Quebec native defenseman; Mathieu Carle has agreed to a contract for the 2012-13 season with Dinamo Riga of the Kontinental Hockey League. Carle was drafted 53rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2006 NHL draft. On July 15th, 2011, Carle was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for prospect defenseman; Mark Mitera.

The 24 year old spent this past season playing in the American Hockey League for the Syracuse Crunch. This season was his best offensively in his five year AHL career. In 72 games he had 6 goals and 31 helps for 37 points. He was the top scoring defenseman on the Crunch. Along with his 37 points he was a +7 and had 41 penalty minutes.

He made his NHL debut for the Montreal Canadiens on November 3rd, 2009 against the Atlanta Thrashers. He played two more games after that one before being sent back down to the AHL. In 3 career NHL games, Carle had zero points, 4 penalty minutes and was a +1.

Carle spent four seasons in the QMJHL prior to playing in the AHL. He played with Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Rouyn-Nouranda Huskies. In 258 games in the Q, he had 49 goals and 146 assists for 195 points along with 311 penalty minutes. Since he was drafted to the Montreal Canadiens he played for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL for 4 seasons and he played for Syracuse for this past year. In 5 career AHL seasons, Carle recorded 36 goals and 98 assists in 294 games.

Carle is a good defenseman with offensive upside and he is not afraid to step up and make a big hit or get rough with opponents to stand up for a teammate.

Dinamo Riga currently has two other Canadians on the roster: F - Jamie Lundmark, G - Chris Holt.

Dinamo Riga Signing Rating: A-, did not pan out into the NHL caliber defenseman that the Canadiens and Ducks had hoped but has had decent numbers in the AHL and he should be able to have offensive success from the blueline in the KHL as well
