The Calgary Flames took another step forward today.
After recent failures to make the postseason, GM Jay Feaster signed a new
offensive weapon.
Roman Cervenka signed a one-year entry-level
contract worth $3,775,000 with the Flames.
Cervenka has spent his last two seasons playing for
Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League. In 105 career KHL games,
Cervenka recorded a total of 100 points.
His playoff capabilities are a key feature that
caught the attention of the Calgary Flames. The Czech national led the Gagarin
Cup playoffs with 21 points in 20 games. Despite the stellar play of Cervenka,
Avangard lost in the championship series. He has a career total of 30 points in
32 playoff games.
The signing failed to distract Flames fans from the
fact that they do not have a coach in place for next season. There will be a
lot of pressure on the Flames this year who have missed the playoffs in 3
consecutive seasons.
Flames signing rating, B+, this is a great pickup. Cervenka is a
worker and a producer, which the Flames desperately need. At only 26, Cervenka
could potentially be long-term in Calgary pending the results of the upcoming
season. The exciting part of this signing is that he will likely be playing
with Jarome Iginla. Iginla plays similarly to Jaromir Jagr, who helped Cervenka
put up his best KHL stats. If the chemistry is actualized, then the Flames are
in business.
