The Anaheim Ducks have signed the 25 year old forward; John Mitchell to a two year, two-way contract. The Neenah,Wisconsin native is not to be confused with the John Mitchell on the New York Rangers.
John Mitchell played this past season with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League. Mitchell is a hard working forward with a huge frame. Mitchell is 6-foot-5 and weighs 216 pounds so he is able to use his body to his advantage. This past season in 50 games he scored 8 goals and had 10 assists for 18 points along with 23 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of +7. The 2011-12 season was his second career AHL season. In 2010-11 he also played for Syracuse and he notched 19 points in 60 games along with 64 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of -1. He also played 3 games in the ECHL in 2010-11 for the Elmira Jackals where he scored once and added one assist for two points.
He started his road to hockey to professional hockey by playing in the United States Hockey League for two years from 2004-2006. In 74 USHL games he scored 9 goals and had 8 assists along with 48 penalty minutes. Mitchell then went on to play four years for the University of Wisconsin Badgers. That season, he was tied with Blake Geoffrion for team lead in goals at 15 and he led the team in penalty minutes.
Whether Mitchell plays for Anaheim in the National Hockey League or Syracuse in the American Hockey League for the 2012-13 season he will be able to make an impact with his big body presence and goal scoring capability.
Anaheim Signing Rating: B-, could be a good asset on the checking line for the Ducks in the future.
