Riley Sheahan for 3

On Thursday the Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms on a 3 year entry level contract with 2010 1st round pick; Riley Sheahan. The forward prospect was drafted 21st overall in 2010. He is a big-body presence for the Red Wings up front. He is 6'2'' and weighs 200 pounds.

Sheahan finished up his Senior year at Notre Dame this year, recording 25 points in 37 games. His junior and sophomore seasons were just as strong for Notre Dame, as he put up 17 and 22 points in his first two years respectively. After his college hockey season ended he signed an amateur tryout agreement with Detroit's farm team in the AHL; Grand Rapid Griffins. He scored his first career AHL goal on March 31st against the Oklahoma City Barons. In seven games for the Griffins he had one goal and one assist.

After his signing, Sheahan reported to the Grand Rapid Griffins of the American Hockey League, Detroit Red Wings' farm team. In all 7 of his games for the Griffins, Sheahan had a total one goal and one assist.

As a rare Detroit first rounder, the coaching staff is very fond of him. Mike Babcock stated in an interview, "I'd love to put him in the lineup. I always like to put big people in the lineup, and he's a big body. It looks like he is going to be able to play."

Sheahan was recalled and played his first career NHL game earlier today in Detroit's 3-2 shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. He had 3 shots on goal and 4 penalty minutes in the loss.

Detroit Signing Rating: B+ , big body forward with offensive upside, should fit great into Babcock's style of play
