48 going on 50
Last year it looked as if there might be no 50 goal scorer at all until a late offensive explosion from Corey Perry got him just barely to the 50 mark. The year before that, there were three (Ovechkin, Stamkos, Crosby). However with Crosby out and Ovechkin underperforming, it seems as if the season will end again with just one player passing 50. Many might have thought Stamkos was going to hit that very mark this week but he’s recently been stalled. With 14 more games left to play, it seems unlikely that he can’t manage to pot those two final goals. With a few more multi-goal games, suddenly 60 doesn’t seem that far off either. But let’s not get greedy. Thank you Stamkos for pulling through when nobody else seems capable. The league, in my opinion, needs those types of All-Star scorers. The ones that score mind-boggling amounts of goals. Malkin still has time to get the 12 more he needs and if anyone else is capable it’s him, but at the moment its Stammer all the way.

Florida On Top

The Panthers continue to hold the Southeast division title for now but the Washington Capitals are only one point back. Florida can't afford to get comfy now when falling from the division lead could mean falling out of the playoffs. Home-ice advantage is a nice perk to have too. If the Panthers can hold on they will end their league-leading playoff drought.

Jet Engines Stalled

Winnipeg may have dropped the last two but they are still right in the heat of the playoff race. The Jets have a 3 game homestand coming up next with games against Dallas and division rivals Washington and Carolina. Expect the crowd to be as loud as ever. Playoff hopes are alive and well in Winnipeg, and what a return to the NHL that would be.

Storm Clouds Subsiding

The Lightning were heating up and gaining quick ground in the fight for 8th seed but it seems that even a red-hot Steven Stamkos wont likely be enough to get them there. Although hope isn't lost yet, managment sure wasn't putting pressure on the team to make it after a great showing last year. Steve Yzerman decided to be a seller at trade deadline because he believed that a Conference Final appearance last year was enough to keep fans happy for a bit. Don't expect the Lightning to make the playoffs but they will definately be back in full force next year.

Reversal of Fortune?

The Caps are currently holding on to the 8th and final seed of the Eastern Conference. They are still in good position to catch Florida and move up to 3rd seed with the Division title. But what if being 8th is maybe a good thing for the Great 8 and his Caps? Remember that they have been the first seed the past two years and the second before that. They always seem to be upset by a lower seeded team in the first or second round. maybe its time they got a chance to do the upestting? Could a change in roles be healthy and maybe lead to a deeper playoff run?
