Rask Out, Turco In

The Boston Bruins announced on Monday night that G Tuukka Rask will be sidelined for 4 - 6 weeks. The Finnish netminder sustained what is being called a lower abdomen/groin strain. The injury occurred in the second period of 3 - 2 loss at home to the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Tuukka Rask
Losing Rask at this stage of the season could prove to be fatal for the Bruins going into the playoffs. This means that G Tim Thomas is going to have to be sharp and healthy if the Bruins are going to have any shot at protecting their championship title. Rask and Thomas have arguably been the most consistent goaltending tandem this season. They have registered a combined .927 SV% and 2.20 GAA resulting in 38 Bruins wins this season.

Marty Turco
To replace Rask, the Bruins have signed G Marty Turco to a one year contract provided that he clears waivers. Turco brings veteran experience to the Bruins and will most likely be used in case of an emergency. He has played in over 600 games (regular season and playoffs) in the NHL and is a safe choice to have as a backup. Also, with the trade deadline being passed, one of the few choices available.

The 36 year old will ride the bench for the majority of his stay in Boston, maintaining confidence in the net. Turco has been brought in to make sure the Bruins stay on a winning track.

  1. Macateer is turco eligible for the Bs post season roster?

What are your thoughts on them signing jonas gustavson in the off season, since thomas is inevitably retiring this year?

    1. Turco is not eligible for the Bruins playoff roster as he was signed after the trade deadline,

Thomas is signed through the 2012/2013 season so in all likelihood he will be back between the pipes. As for Gustavsson, from a Leafs perspective I would hope that he leaves but he is a risky pickup for any team.
