Goon Review

A movie reviewer I am not. A hockey player and blogger I am. And I recently went to see a hockey movie and that makes me more than qualified to review it, right? It can't be that hard.

Goon is the funniest movie I have seen this year for sure and the funniest I can remember seeing since The Hangover. And that's saying something.

Sean William Scott is the perfect actor for the lead role. He plays Doug Glatt, a bouncer from a family of doctors. He struggles to find where he belongs in life when he goes to a hockey game with his friend. While there he winds up in a fight with one of the players and absolutely destroys him. The coach of one of the teams notices him and gives him a tryout with the team. After some training on the basics of hockey, Doug is ready for the team and begins pounding the living crap out of opposing enforcers. The best part of that, is that Doug is the nicest and most awkward person.

He's then sent to another team, to help protect their star player, Xavier Laflamme  (played by Marc-Andre Grondin), who had been knocked out by the leading tough guy, Ross Rhea (played by Liev Schreiber). Doug brings his nice guy attitude to a team that is most certainly the opposite of him. This movie really does show the lifestyle of a lot of hockey players, from the crazy party guy (Xavier Laflamme) to the humble guy in Doug.

Doug also meets a girl with a "pretty name and a pretty face", Eva (played by Allison Pill) who is a puck bunny with a boyfriend. After an awkward night, they kiss and Eva feels really bad the next day, and tries to avoid Doug.

Without giving too much else away, Doug's team plays Rhea's team in the final game, and so the new guy must battle the veteran.

The movie has so many little funny parts that will keep you laughing the whole movie, inside jokes, and just over-all hilarity. There is even some subtle goalie humour if you pay enough attention.

The very first shot of the movie makes no sense at first, but once you get to the end, it makes a lot of sense and it's really funny. A great ending to a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars!
