The Pacific division is heating up as teams find themselves with about 26 games left on their schedules. With just 11 points separating the top from the basement of the group, there maybe a great deal of change in not only within the division but as well as the Western Conference Playoff race. Of the teams in the playoff picture in the west, San jose sits in 3rd place as division leader with Los Angeles and Phoenix in 7th and 8th places respectively. Outside the playoffs are the Dallas Stars in 11th, just 4 points back of 8th place. Situated in 13th are the surging Anaheim Ducks who have found a groove as of late going 6-2-2 in their last 10 games.

- The San Jose Sharks are getting help from every aspect of their team recently, helping to keep them atop the Pacific. Holding up the back end, Antti Niemi is having an excellent season with a save percentage of .917 as well as a GAA of 2.34. Brent Burns is providing offence from the blue line with 13 points in his last 15 games. UP front, Joe Pavelski is on fire with 5 goals and 7 assists in his last 10 games including a 4 point night in Washington on Monday night.

- San Jose acquired F Dominic Moore and a 7th round pick from Tampa Bay in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick. The deal occurred before the teams squared off in Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

- The Los Angeles Kings received some unlikely offensive help on Sunday, from three call ups from their AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. Dwight King scored his first career NHL goal, followed by Andrei Loktionov's 2nd of the season. Jordan Nolan scored the game winning goal, which was his first career goal, to help polish off the Stars 4-2.

Dustin Penner risking it all making pancakes at IHOP earlier this week.
- Jonathan Quick has a 1.81 GAA and a .936 save percentage over his last 31 games in net for the Kings. Stats like these look great on his resume for the Vezina Trophy at the end of this season.

- Los Angeles and Dallas are two of the most physical teams in the NHL. Los Angeles has 1579 hits and is second in hits. Dallas is a close third with 1512 hits which creates a very physical defensive game for both teams.

- Dallas acquired a 2nd round pick in 2012 and a 3rd round pick in 2013 from Philadelphia in exchange for D Nicklas Grossman.

- Dallas is reportedly looking to deal F Mike Ribeiro this week, which brings in to question their chances of attaining a playoff birth.

- Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith was named the Nhl's first star of the week. Smith recorded a .975 save percentage with a 0.75 GAA over four wins in four starts, including a big 4-1 divisional win against Dallas.

- A 14-2-3 start to 2012 has seen the Ducks rise into the playoff picture after a dismal start to the season, which saw them as a basement dweller.

- Anaheim F Devante Smith-Pelly has returned from a fractured foot suffered in the WJHC in December. Smith-Pelly successfully completed a four-game conditioning assignment in Syracuse and has returned to the Ducks.

- Ducks recalled D Nate Guenin From the Syracuse Crunch. Guenin has 1 point for the Ducks in 10 games this season.

- Anaheim prospect Emerson Etem scored his 51st goal in his 50th game this season for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL. Etem was drafted 29th overall by the Ducks in 2010.

- The Ducks sent D Bryan Rodney to Edmonton in exchange for F Ryan O'Marra. They also acquired F Riley Holzapfel in exchange for F Maxime Macenauer.

- Teemu Selanne tied Brendan Shanahan for 12th all-time in goals at 656 and moved into 21st for all-time points with 1392.

- Divisional games this week - Coyotes @ Kings on Thursday night, Stars @ Coyotes on Saturday and Kings @ Coyotes on Tuesday.

What to watch:

  1. Corey Perry - 5 points in his last 3 games for a total of 46 points in 57 games
  2. Pacific Goaltending - Quick, Smith and Niemi all have under a 2.5 GAA this season
  3. Anaheim Ducks - At this rate, the Ducks could find themselves in the playoff picture by the end of the month.
  4. Upcoming divisional games - bound to be tight games with a good chance of lots of overtime
  5. Joe Pavelski - He is on a tear lately

The Pacific division is heating up as the point spread continues to narrow between teams as they push for a playoff birth. Phoenix and Los Angeles are producing very low scoring games that are often settled by just by a goal making for some exciting hockey. With plenty of hockey left, the division is still up for grabs as well as playoff positions!
