OHL 3rd Team All-Stars


The Ontario Hockey League announced the three All-Star teams earlier today. Each all-star team consists of three forwards, two defenseman, one goalie and one coach.

The First All-Star Team

Forwards:

Alex Friesen - C - Niagara IceDogs --- The two-way forward had his best offensive season this year of his five year OHL career. In 62 games, he scored 26 goals and added 45 assists for 71 points. He also had 109 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of +39. He led his team in penalty minutes and was fourth on Niagara in points. Friesen was selected 172nd overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Andrew Agozzino - LW - Niagara IceDogs --- Friesen's teammate, Agozzino also had his best offensive season this year of his five year OHL career. In 67 games, Agozzino notched 40 goals along with 48 assists for 88 points. He led the IceDogs in goals and points. He added 67 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of +32. Agizzino is an undrafted forward who is hoping to land either an American Hockey League contract or a National Hockey League contract this offseason.

Nail Yakupov - RW - Sarnia Sting --- The number one ranked prospect for the 2012 NHL draft had another great offensive season with the Sting. He was limited to 42 games this season because he played for Russia at the World Junior Championships and he suffered an injury this season. In 42 games for the Sting, Yakupov (left) scored 31 goals and had 38 assists for 69 points. He also had 30 penalty minutes and he was a +15. He led the team in goals even though he only played in 42 of the 68 games. Yakupov is one of the most highly touted prospects to come out of the OHL in years.


Defenseman:


Beau Schmitz - D - Plymouth Whalers --- In his 4th season in the Ontario Hockey League, Schmitz totaled 14 goals and 40 assists in 62 games. He was the highest scoring defenseman on the Whalers, and the fourth highest in the OHL. Schmitz also had 91 penalty minutes was had a plus/minus of +37. On April 23rd, the 21 year-old undrafted defenseman was signed by the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3 year entry level contract.

Ryan Sproul - D - Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds --- In his 2nd OHL season, Sproul's offensive numbers increased significantly from his rookie year. In 61 game for the Greyhounds, Sproul scored 23 goals and had 31 assists for 54 points. He was +16 and had 53 penalty minutes. He led all defenseman in the OHL in goals and was third in defenseman scoring. The Detroit Red Wings drafted Sproul 55th overall in the 2011 NHL draft.

Goaltender:


John Gibson - G - Kitchener Rangers --- John Gibson played in 32 games for the Rangers this season. He was limited to 32 games because he was playing for the United States at the World Junior Championships, minor injuries and because he split time in between the pipes with teammate; Frank Palazzese. In those 32 games he had a record of 21-10-0. He had the 7th best goals against average in the league at 2.75 and he had the best save percentage in the league at .928. He had one shutout. Gibson was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks, 39th overall at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Coach:

Stan Butler - Brampton Battalion --- Butler has been the only coach in the Battalion's 14 year history. He coached the Battalion to a 36-22-10 record which was 7th best in the Ontario Hockey League. Butler recorded his 500th career OHL win behind the bench on February 27th, 2012.
