Cold Blooded Signing

On April 6th, the Ottawa Senators have signed Defense Prospect Ben Blood to a two year Entry Level Contract.

23 year old Ben Blood had to work real hard to get this contract. Ben Blood played 5 seasons of hockey before he signed this ETC. After being drafted in the 4th round, 120th overall in the 2007 draft by the senators, Blood played in the USHL for the Des Moines Buccaneers. Blood would record no goals, and 7 assists with 17 penalty minutes and a +/- rating of +1 in 11 games before being traded on November 21st 2007. Within that deal, Blood was heading to The Indianna Ice in exchange for forward Brett Bruneteau. Blood would finish the season with The Ice recording 10 goals and 6 assists for 16 points, 83 Penalty minutes and a +/- rating of -9 in 46 games. Blood would also play in the playoffs for the Ice in that season recording 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points, and 14 penalty minutes in their 4 playoff games that year.

Following his eventful USHL year, Blood would head off to The University of North Dakota to play in the WCHA for 4 seasons. During his rookie season in the WCHA, Blood barely made a sound recording no goals and one assist and 12 penalty minutes in 31 games. Blood would make a little more noise his sophomore season recording 5 goals and 9 assists for 14 points, and 96 penalty minutes in 43 games. Blood would then continue this average for his next two seasons recording 2 goals, 10 assists for 12 points and 48 penalty minutes in 44 games one season and 3 goals, 18 assists for 21 points, with 73 penalty minutes in 42 games. Blood has played one game with the Binghamton Senators of the AHL so far after the signing when he recorded no points and 2 penalty minutes in the debut.

Ben Blood has the personality of a team leader. He is great at communicating and shows other qualities on the ice and in the locker room. His defensive style is very much positional. He likes to use his size to force players to the boards and is great at one on one situations. His size also allows him to clear the crease with ease. Blood is strong on his skates and has some quick hands however his speed is lacking, which can be fixed in time. Though Blood is big at 6-foot-3, 212 pounds and likes to use his size, he is very disciplined and never uses it when it could hurt his team.

Senator Signing rating: B-, good prospect, will become a great defensive defenseman.
